Tall Tales & Murder commissioned by RTÉ and BBC for two series

Currently in Post Production - Production Designer Emma Lowney.

BBC Northern Ireland and RTÉ, have commissioned two six-part series of new drama Tall Tales & Murder, in association with Screen Ireland. The show is written by Stuart Carolan - the writer and creator of RTÉ's smash-hit crime drama Love/Hate, one of the most critically acclaimed and successful Irish dramas ever produced - and is co-created with double EMMY and Directors Guild of America Award winner Chris Addison (Veep, Breeders, The Thick of It). Tall Tales & Murder is produced by Avalon (Breeders, Starstruck, Catastrophe), in association with Ireland-based Metropolitan Pictures (KIN).

This darkly comedic crime drama will star Ella Lily Hyland (Black Doves, Towards Zero, Silent Roar), Aidan Gillen (Love/Hate, Game of Thrones, KIN), Philippa Dunne (Amandaland, Derry Girls, The Woman in the Wall) and Packy Lee (Peaky Blinders). Co-commissioned by RTÉ and BBC Northern Ireland, in association with Screen Ireland, filming began this week in the Republic of Ireland, with the first series set to premiere in 2026. Tall Tales & Murder will be distributed internationally by Avalon.

The story is based on the much loved eight-book Dublin Trilogy by Caimh McDonnell.

Stuart Carolan, Writer and Executive Producer, said: “I’ve been a fan of the brilliant Chris Addison since The Thick of It - it’s been incredible fun working with him to bring this insane story to life.”

Chris Addison, Director and Executive Producer, said: “I’m frankly giddy with delight to get to team up with the twisted and highly original mind of Stuart Carolan to create this show. We’ve taken Caimh’s wonderful novel as a jumping off point and ended up with what I like to think of as a dark and delicious screwball drama.”

Irish-Dutch-Belgian co-production Whitetail set to bow at Toronto

Movie Review (TIFF 2025): ‘Whitetail’ Will Linger As One of the Best Films of the Year

World Premier TIFF 2025 Centrepiece - Production Designer Emma Lowney.

Dutch director Nanouk Leopold’s seventh feature provides uncommonly vivid views of southern Irish scenery and the driven, haunted woman (Natasha O’Keeffe) at the story’s core.

A slow-burn thriller about reckoning with trauma and containing the furies that threaten to reduce everything to ashes, Whitetail is rife with the same tightly coiled tension that exists deep within its protagonist. It’s just as remarkable for its vivid portrayal of its Irish setting, which director Leopold captures with great authenticity.

Set against the haunting landscapes of County Kerry and County Cork, Whitetail is a slow-burning, emotionally charged drama that explores grief, memory and the blurred lines between past and present. Jen (Natasha O'Keeffe, from Peaky Blinders and Sherlock), a conservation ranger working in the same forest where her younger sister tragically died years earlier, finds her routine disrupted by the unexpected reappearance of Oscar (Aaron McCusker, from Bohemian Rhapsody [+] and Dexter), a former boyfriend. As poachers begin leaving violent marks on the land she fiercely protects, Jen is forced to confront the emotional legacy she has long suppressed.

The cast is rounded off by Andrew Bennett, Simone Kirby, Rory Nolan and Aidan O'Hare. Key creatives include DoP Frank van den Eeden, production designer Emma Lowney, art director Stephen Park and composer Stephen Rennicks.

Housewife of the Year review: Award-winning documentary unearths the sad stories behind an Irish TV relic

Winner of Best Irish Feature Documentary at the Galway Film Fleadh 2024 -

Production Designer Emma Lowney.

A lesser documentary might have gone down the point-and-snigger route: “Look at this! Can you believe how backward Ireland was in those days?”

Instead, Cassidy uses the Housewife of the Year competition, absurd as it was, as a jumping off point for a look at how generations of women were subjugated by the State and the church – which were basically one and the same entity – sometimes with the collusion of their husbands and parents..

Vivid and moving as their recollections are, there’s a remarkable lack of bitterness here. The Housewife of the Year show may have been a symbol of a repressive society, but some of them look back on it with a certain degree of affection.
